avr studio is for compiling program
ponyprog is for downloading the hex file in to microcontroller
we can also use avr studio for programming
but ponyprog programming cable is of less cost

i preffer you to go for
“pony prog” software if you have serial port (9 pin)in your PC
it consists of a simple programming cable

im also using vegakits
i think for avr dev brd you need a special programmer
if your system is having serial port (9 pin)
you better go for “ponyprog”
with this software you can program your microcontroller
you just need a isp cable
even you can make it with few resistors
check over internet
if serial port is not avilable then better to go for usb progrmmers the are avilable every ware

the rs232 logic to TTL logic ……?
as the RF module works only at TTL logic
use a max232ic between serialport and RF transmitter module

im working on the same project
first i made it with 8051 later i developed it with atmega16L
currently im working to stebilize the display using a IR slot sensor and interrupts of atmega16,
if you want to make a simple one
you need to work on delay calculations as per your motor.use the delay functions given in util folder in winavr

a modified servo takes 60deg/.22seconds
which is very slow
im trying to use a stepper but im not able to get a stepper that can be operated at 1000rpm speed any IDEA about it

i got the same problem
but my guide told me a solution
to manually reset the MCU up to 20seconds
you need to press the reset switch for not less than 20seconds
he said that some times the MCU goes in to sleepmode
