Simple Intercom Using Transistors

I am new to Electronic Circuits and I am interested in Jan Hamer circuit

shown 

here.  

 

I tried to contact him via his webstie hoping for a guru’s input but his email does not work. So could anyone explain/talk me through how the circuit works and what function the electrolytic capacitors and transistors etc are performing? I am newby to electrical theory also but am trying to learn.  

 

I want to have a crack at designing and building my own so I am wanting to understand how others have built theirs, using only transistors as opposed to Op Amps.  Are there limitations to doing it this way etc?

 

Any information that could further my understanding of transistors and circuits would be much appreciated.

Hi Bow,

if you are new to electronics this particular circuit needs a very long explanation, yet you may not able to understand properly. Honestly if you want to learn electronics, please start with some simple basic circuits.
