How to connect crystal oscillator with Atmega16

Hello,

I am making a wireless gamepad using bluetooth module AUBTM-20.I am using ATMEGA16. I am using tact switches for the buttons. Is it necessary to connect a crystal oscillator for the proper working of the joystick and the usart communication ?

Please help….
