Hello all, new to the site, Great site so far!

I wanted to see of there was anyone that could help with a project I’m working on. Its a Planetary Orrery that has a central lamp (sun) and 8 planets. (8 DC motors) ea. controlled ea. by adjustable timers say 1-5 mins ea. the overview of what I would like to happen is to press a start button and the lamp comes on and stays on thru the duration of the demindstation, and motor 1 starts at a consant speed that can be adjusted and run for a a period say 3 min. and stops. then motor 2  starts and does the same, and so on each of the remaining motors has finished its 3 min. Its would be nice that when motor 8 ends all eight 8 motors start and run untill a stop/reset button is pressed.

I also was planning to execute some type of audio file(s) off each motors voltage to expalin that perticular planet possibe. the motor can be low torque 6-12v or what ever would work.

If anyone has any good ideas, I hope this isnt too far fetched, just trying to start somewhere with this.

Many many years ago my gradfather and I built one and it just had one motor to drive all (9) planet when Pluto had a life!! and a swicth for the lamp and the motor, pretty simple!

    Thanks

    Kendall

    Hi Kendal,

    Very nice project !

You need to use a microcontroller basically and I would suggest to use stepper motor which will give you better control over the rotation. You can use built in timers of the microcontroller to set the time.

If you are new to microcontroller programming, you better go for Arduino board.
