can you send me the diagram of this So that i can tell you what is the problem you have.As per you statements You are feeding the 5volt to the L293D input.But you gave the 24 volts as a reference .That is what the problem i think so.Try to upload the diagram with ratings

Why cant you go proximity sensor.What my suggestion is You can fix the sensor on shaft of the dc motor.Then Keep on LDR or photodiode in oppsite .It will count the rotations and you can easliy calibrate the same ……………

1.one line which has a three pins
the centre one is common
and the two terminals for applyring the voltage.
2.in the second which has a two pins
keep the multimeter in the continuity mode.keep one terminal of the mulimeter into the common.and check the othere side terminals /if multinmeter beeps that is NC.and another one is NO.
what he said is correct .I can tell you what to do.You can use the 555 in Monostable mode.But what happen is you cant control the input after 10 seconds.I know this circuit which i have already designed in IIT .This is simple only.
