i was actually given the project to make a vending machine using 8051 and pc with keypad and LCD interface, if u want those files, i can send u the text files of code which may assist u understanding serial communication.(i have successfully made the given project)

check whether u have set the baud rate of hyper terminal(same as in 8051) or not?
