Internet marketing can be overwhelming, particularly when you are a novice and only starting to learn about the field. You’ve probably already read a bunch of articles and forum posts that are full of information on how to be the next “big thing”. Those lists likely all contradict each other. One will tell you that you have to be patient if you want to be the next big thing. Another will say that you need to be extremely smart about business if you wish to be the next big thing. You’ll also find some that will tell you that you must be really creative if you want to succeed. And, naturally, there are going to be loads of sales pages claiming they have the software or class to teach you how to be the next big thing.
The truth is that all of these things are essential to your success (well, perhaps not all of those software systems, but the other stuff). You need to be persevering and smart about business and creative if you want to be successful. However, none of those things count if you are not able to clearly communicate all of them to the people you want to buy from you.
Good communication means more than simply coming up with a fantastic sales page. You can find a highly competent copywriter to create that for you. Good communication is more than having a stunning web site with a lengthy FAQ page. You can have a pretty site with an extensive FAQ section by hiring experienced web site designers and writers. Good communication calls for being good with interpersonal communication and in straightforward copy also. So what is it that you need to do?
1. Answer every single e-mail you get in 24 hours or less. This is not a joke. You don’t need to write a long note for every last mail. You can just let the other person know that you’ve received and read his email and will be getting back to him soon. Try including a snippet that references something the the other person has written. This tells the person that you really go through every email you got and are not an autoresponder.
2. Answer your phone. Don’t screen your calls. You should always try to answer the phone by the third ring. Do this even if you earnestly don’t wish to talk to the person attached to the caller ID flashing on your screen. There’s one good news about this rule. You don’t have to be attached to the telephone 24/7. Instead of this, set distinct “business” hours that you are available to take phone calls. These hours should be displayed conspicuously on your web site and mentioned in your voice mail message as well. And, naturally, every individual who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.
3. See to it that the people you send messages and emails to actually have received those messages and emails. This will tell the person that you genuinely care about communicating with them. You’ll endear yourself more with the people you work with and who purchase from you if you ask them if they have any questions and check to make sure that they understood the points you were trying to make.
