I suggest you to instead of buying components in bulk first you study some circuits that you can understand and make list of them. then you buy components required in that circuits.
Commonly used transistors are BC547,557.
ICs are 555,4017,4011
Hi Chris,
I used to shift my place quite often and where ever I go, I set up a kind of small electronics lab in my room. The components I used to purchase from the nearby store are as follows;
RESISTORS:
10 ohm, 100 ohm, 330 ohm, 470 ohm, 1K, 5.5K, 10K, 47K, 100K, 470K, 1M
POTENTIOMETERS:
100 ohm, 1K, 10K, 100K, 1M
CAPACITORS:
0.01uF, 0.1uF, 1uF, 4.7uF, 10uF, 22uF, 47uF, 100uF, 330uF, 1000uF
DIODE:
1N4007, 1N4148
TRANSISTORS:
BC548, BC558, SL100, SK100, BC107
ICs
LM555, CD4017, LM358, LM741, ULN2004 etc.
Hope this is what you were looking for.
