after connecting the cable to PC

    right click on my computer

    “devise manager”

there you will find the usb to comport

if it is not there there mustbe a problem with the cable

    try to update the driver

    which microcontroller you are using

if you want to use 8051 i preffer to use P89V51RD2 microcontroller which can be programmed through serial cable just a MAX232 is required

in case of  AVR microcontrollers, all AVR mcu’s can be programed through serial port(DB9) use “ponyprog”. the programming cable is very simple to make

    all the best

    Hi Ritesh,

Follow the steps mentioned by Krishna in his post. Further more I suggest you to download and install any terminal emulator like Teraterm, Putty, Mtty etc. and try the loop back test.

Just connect the cable, open the emulator, set the baud rate and all, in connect option give the same port number which you’ve seen in the device manager.

Now short pin2 and pin3 of db9 connector by any means. If you are getting the same letters in the emulator screen which you’ve typed, means your cable is 100% working.

    Hi Ritesh,

Making USB to DB9 cable at home is not a good idea because if you need this cable to work you need suitable drivers installed on the operatin system(windows7 or XP). Better get an good quality USB to DB9cable from the market & install the corresponding drivers which come along with the pack. Before getting it, confirm the supporting operating systems with the seller.

    Hi Friend,

I’m sure that there is no problem with the USB cable. Can you post a Screen Shot or picture of hyper terminal data that you are receving from GSM modem when connected.

Important Note: Take care that you are connecting Tx pin of GSM module to Rx pin of DB9 serial cable & Rx pin of GSM module to Tx pin of DB9 serialcable.
