I am using Arduino and GSM SIM900 module for a project. but the problem with both of them is that when given supply they do not work and we see that their regulator(7805 and LM317 respectively) is much heated up. and also thus, voltage at its output ports is not what is expected.

we are using 12V rechargable battery

kindly help me out. thanks in advance

voltage regulator always get heated. its a normal thing.

but it should give desire output of 5V.

    what output you r getting?

check your connections. check anything is not get shorted

Post your connection diagram and if possible take a snapshot of it and post here.
