Hi there
I don't think it is necessary to involve max232 IC for this task. Both 8051 and GSM module are capable of communicating over USART protocol. Just make the right connections and it will work for sure. Also you should be aware of GSM AT commands while working with it.

if your GSM modem directly gives TTL output then no need of MAX232 chip
otherewise you have to convert RS232 to TTL and vice versa
but you will easily get this diagram on google
