input pin connected to output pin

i declared one pin P1^0 of microcontroller as input pin by assigning it to  ” P1^0= 1; ” and took other pin as output pin P1^1

and connected input pin to output pin but the result is always low on input pin.

can any one explain ‘why it is so…….????’
