How to communicate AT89S52 with PC via USB port

I have to connect AT89S52 to PC via USB port for which I am using FT232R (USB to UART interface IC) for this purpose. I have to transfer data from PC and it is stored in external memory connected to AT89S52 and vice versa for which a software is installed in PC. So I want to know what are the steps involved and protocols used to communicate with PC in this case. Thank you.
