First you should learn sample programms like LED Blink, BUZZER, LCD etc.

 

After that you can find a project to be developed and start working…

it is better to first get enough knoledge on 8051 and embedded system design from good books

I need to design an up-down counter with preset n reset-the counter should be of 5 digits,with the display on multiplexed seven-segment displays
I need the code for 89C51
Can anyone plz help

actually you dont require micro controller for such up down counter. 

it is readily available chip.one 4 digit-7 segment display controller IC is also available.

 

how ever if you want to use micro controller you can take help of tutorials available on this site.
