Help for an absolute newby

Can someone please direct me to resources to help design a microcontroller to send a signal to a sevro motor after it has traveled a pre-set distance?  I have found text on designing a board to move a servo after a pre-set time, but nothing on distance.

you have to first find out how much distnce is covered when motor rotates onc revolution

then find out how mane revolutions motor has rotated and from that get the distance
