GSM Module port configuration problem

I am trying to connect  sim 900A gsm modem to my pc running win 8.1 x64 connected with RS232 cable . In the device manager it shows that the device is working properly but when i try to connect it using hyperterminal it gives an error saying "change port configuration".  I dont know what to do now i have tried
everything like installing the drivers, changing the baud rates ,enabling and disabling the port. Please try to resolve my problem .

up to my knowledge GSM modem works on some specific COM ports only like COM1 or COM2 likewise. if in your system by default GSM modem is connected to some other port like COM11, COM21 then it wont work

Then wat should i do ? I have tried changing the port to com1 but it didnt work .Actually i am trying to send sms as soon as it receives a sms. Is there any other way i can connect it or do the same.
