Electronics › Electronics › Differnce between DB9 male and Female
What’s the difference between DB9 male and female connectors as per dimension concern. I’ve mounting space for standard DB9 male connector(R/A), can i mount the standard DB9 female(R/A) on it?
Essentially both male and female connectors are identical apart from the fact that they have pins or sockets. The chassis mounting dimensions are, or should be, exactly the same.
The same applies for lead end shrouds, they will accept both types.
Hi Amith,
I would like to add one more thing to the Pete’s post. In most of the case the female pins are found mounted on the devices and the male pins are found in the connectors, at the end of connector cables etc.
But when we connect DB9 male to DB9 female, it should be one to one connection, So If pin 1 of DB9 male starts from right, that of female should start from left.(since t5hey will be in opposite direction). What i told is correct?
Hi Amith,
Why dont you get a couple of DB9 male and female connectors from the market and solve the doubt yourself.
You can do continuity test using a multimeter to find out which pin of the male connector is in contact with which pin of the female connector when the male pin is plugged into the female pin.
Hi Ajish,
Ya, I did the continuity test and I can’t mount the DB9 female in the place designed for Male.
thanks for feedbacks.
That’s right. You can’t!
Firstly, you should know is a straight through cable with DTE and DCE equivalent. The female is connceted to the male in a form of cross intersection, it’s numbered from 1 through 9 and its operation 2&3(DTE)<> is changed to 3&2(DCE), 4&6(DTE)<> is changed to 6&4(DCE) and likewise 7&8. Hope it helps.
