The 7805 normally available can supply maximum current around 1A only. The SM630 might consume more than that much power and that’s why the 7805 gets heated up.
To avoid this problem use use the 7805 which comes in TO-3 package. This package can supply more current and use can effectievely use a large heat sink with it.
