obviously you have to give pulses to transmitter. its actually modulated wave. use 38 KHz frquency as carrier wave. and at receiver side use IR sensor like TSOP1738 or sharp sensor.this will increase range up to 20-25 feets. for ever more range search for IR range extender circuit on google
