You can choose the sensor for distance measurement based on your application i.e whether indoor or outdoor application and based on the distance.
If indoor you can use IR sensor and for short distance (upto 10cm) it will not be appropriate.
If you want measure in outdoor better you can choose ultrasonic sensor.
