IR sensors work with infrared light which cannot be seen by a naked human eye. Also deploying such sensors in distance measuring tasks which demand a good precision, is not a right thought. These sensors change their values just by variation in light pattern around them. So according to me IR sensors won't solve this issue. Try using something related to sound, like ultrasonic and all, they'll give good results
