The diode needs to be connected between pin 2(P side) and pin 11(N side). Refer to its circuit diagram, you'll understand it better. Also make sure that you use a NPN transistor for LED switching. Otherwise, the circuit is fine. Try re-checking your connections and make sure that they are tight enough.
